Journey to Stardom: Piyashi Sengupta’s National Debut on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa

Long before reality shows became the mainstay of Indian television, a young girl from Assam was quietly preparing herself to take on the biggest stage of her life. In 2005, Piyashi Sengupta emerged as a Top 40 Finalist in Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005—a moment that marked her national debut and ignited her journey in India’s music scene.

From her earliest years, music was more than just a passion for Piyashi—it was her way of life. Having trained rigorously in Hindustani Classical music from the tender age of 3 and later diversifying into Bollywood and semi-classical forms, she built a solid foundation that would eventually carry her across national stages. But nothing could truly prepare her for the exhilarating, transformative whirlwind that would be Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.

🌍 A Nationwide Talent Hunt

Unlike regional contests, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 was the real deal—a national platform watched by millions across the country. Before appearing on television, Piyashi had already crossed a major hurdle: winning a massive national talent hunt competition. The finals of this hunt were held at the iconic Talkatora Stadium in Delhi, where participants from all over India came together to compete for a spot in the main show.

Victory at the national hunt earned her a direct audition with the core panel of legendary judges—including Himesh Reshammiya, Jatin-Lalit, Aadesh Shrivastava, and Ismail Darbar. Hosted by the charismatic Shaan, this was more than just a music competition—it was a musical bootcamp and an emotional rollercoaster.

🎙 A Debut to Remember

The main show was shot in Mumbai’s iconic Mehboob Studios, a place that had birthed the dreams of many stars. For Piyashi, a young girl from Assam stepping into Mumbai for the first time, everything felt larger than life—the lights, the stage, the cameras, the crowd, and the overwhelming energy of a national production.

Despite the awe, fate tested her early on. Just before her key performance round, she fell from a staircase at the studio, injuring herself. Battling both the physical pain and mental pressure, she still chose to perform—a testament to her unshakable spirit and love for music. The pain was real, but so was the fire inside her.

And what a performance it was! She sang the soul-stirring “Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aayi” from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a song known for its emotional intensity. Her voice, even through pain, conveyed vulnerability and depth that left a mark on both the audience and the judges.

🌟 Judges’ Praise and National Recognition

Among the most memorable moments of her performance was the reaction from Aadesh Shrivastava, who praised her tone as “having a unique Pakistani texture—something rare and beautiful.” The other judges were equally impressed, acknowledging the maturity in her voice and her ability to emote flawlessly through melody. For a first-timer on such a massive stage, Piyashi had already proven she belonged there.

Although her journey in the competition ended at the Top 40 level, the impact of her appearance was far-reaching. The show was aired nationally, and even regional media in Assam covered her success story, making her a known face and voice in her home state. It was the beginning of many more milestones to come.

🤝 Friends, Mentors, and a New Chapter

During her Sa Re Ga Ma Pa journey, Piyashi made lifelong friends and connections in the industry. She shared her room with Twinkle Bajpai (now known as Tia Bajpai), who later went on to become a celebrated actress with films like Haunted 3D and 1920: Evil Returns.

She also befriended the musical duo Sharib-Toshi, now widely known for their hit songs like Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse and compositions in films like Raaz Reboot. These connections not only made her feel at home in an unfamiliar city but also became part of her extended artistic family in the years to come.

🎶 The Legacy of a First Step

Though Piyashi had already earned acclaim before this with her classical accolades, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa was her first taste of mainstream national stardom. It was a platform that tested her endurance, unveiled her to a wider audience, and added a new layer to her musical persona.

Today, looking back, she considers the Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 experience as a once-in-a-lifetime moment—a rite of passage that helped shape her into the dynamic, expressive, and grounded performer she is today.

This was not just the story of a performance. It was the story of courage, talent, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of musical excellence. And for Piyashi Sengupta, it was just the beginning.
