A raaga is never chosen — it reveals itself to you. Here’s how Raag Yaman became my spiritual anchor…
Some melodies don’t just enter your ears — they enter your soul.
Raagas are like ancient rivers of emotion — flowing through time, carrying stories, moods, and divine presence. Growing up amidst tanpuras, harmoniums, and early morning Riyaz, I was exposed to many such rivers. But there was one… that waited for the right moment to arrive.
🌸 Raag Yaman — The Call I Could Not Ignore
It was not taught. It was not assigned.
It revealed itself during a quiet evening practice, when the sun had just bowed out and the first lamp flickered.
Raag Yaman walked in — like a breeze scented with longing and divinity.
I remember the mukhda I hummed. It felt like I’d sung it before, maybe in another life. The rishab tugged at my heart; the tivra madhyam opened a doorway I never knew existed.
It wasn’t I who chose the raag.
It was the raag that chose me.
🪷 What Yaman Taught Me
- Discipline with Devotion: Every note in Yaman is structured, yet feels like surrender.
- Romance without Words: It doesn’t need lyrics to make you feel. The raag is the emotion.
- A Mirror to the Soul: On days I felt lost, singing Yaman made me feel found.
👣 From My Gurus’ Eyes
Each of my mentors gave me their blessings, but it was my mother, Manika Sengupta, who first noticed that I sang Yaman differently.
“It listens to you as much as you sing it,” she said once. That stayed with me.
🎤 A Raaga That Became a Companion
To this day, whenever I begin a concert or start a new vocal experiment, I revisit Yaman. Not out of habit — but out of gratitude. For choosing me.
Because in the end, music isn’t something we conquer.
It’s something we let guide us — one raag at a time.
